Can one small electric bike for adults really fit a 5' rider and a 6'4" rider? In the video below, we put the Simple Step-Thru 20" to the test with riders of three very different heights, including a 5'4" woman, to show exactly how it adjusts.
After the video, you’ll also find a quick answer to one of the most common sizing questions we get: what size bike should a 5'4" woman ride?
I'm gonna show you how this 20-inch e-bike, the Simple Step Through, can accommodate riders 410 up to 6'4".
Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today I've got the Simple Step-Thru 20-inch e-bike that can accommodate riders 4’10” to six four. Now we don't have 4’10” riders here, but I'm going to show you with Lisa our 5 foot 4 rider. How we can even go lower for another rider beside her and how we can adjust up for a taller rider. So let's get into it. All right we're going to start with Jeff here, who's six foot four. Let's pull the seat post as high as it goes. We had it right there at the highest it goes so why don't you give that a shot, Jeff? Now, you can see, too, we've got travel here on the stem. I believe we've got it pretty close to the top. Yeah, we do. Let's bring it down just a touch. Good shot there. Okay. Now, we can pull them away, too. Would that be better? Do you like it there? So, now, little bike, tall man, adjusted perfectly. If you're shopping for bikes for tall people, this is a great option. All right, Jeff's going to take a little spin around the parking lot. Here we go.
And you can see his back's upright. He's not leaning over. He's comfortable. We've got it perfectly adjusted. These ape hangers make it nice because you've got that extra travel where you can bring it into the rider's body. So let's show you how we adjust for a 5'4 rider now. All right, now we're here with Lisa's 5'4, and let's go ahead and adjust for her. And we can bring this down. Now go ahead and see how that, it may be too low actually. Good? Now you can still see she's got her feet flat on the ground. So let me see, go ahead and put your foot on there. So I think we could raise it, but if she's comfortable there, that's why you can, a shorter rider could fit on here. Now, bars are a little high, I think, right? Yeah. How's that? Good. Good? Yeah. So, yeah, we got it good for her, easily adjustable. It's quick. All right. Perfectly adjustable for Lisa. Okay, now I'm gonna adjust it for me at five foot 10. I raised the seat and tilted the bars in. There are two bolts up here you can adjust to tilt towards your body. And I like them coming right in. So I'm just sitting right here and the bars come in and my back's upright. I'm still getting my good leg extension. And this low step-through makes it easy.

Most 5'4" women fit a small frame. The exact size depends on the type of bike and your inseam, but here’s a general guide:
If you’re between sizes, choose the smaller frame. It’s easier to raise a seat and handlebars than to make a frame that’s too big feel comfortable. For riders closer to 5' tall, see our guide to e-bikes for short women.
One bike for the whole household. Because it adjusts across such a wide height range, partners or family members of different heights can share the same e-bike.
Easy to store and transport. Smaller wheels mean a shorter, more compact bike that fits more easily in an apartment, garage corner, car trunk, RV or boat.
A lower center of gravity. With the frame sitting closer to the ground, the bike feels steady at slow speeds and when you’re stopping or starting.
Is a 20-inch bike too small for an adult?
Not necessarily. Many 20" e-bikes are designed for adults, with long seat posts and adjustable handlebars that extend for taller riders.
Can a 6'4" man ride a small e-bike?
Yes, as long as the seat post and stem extend far enough. Check the maximum seat height and make sure your leg is almost fully extended at the bottom of each pedal stroke.
What size bike should a 5-foot woman ride?
Look for an extra-small or small frame, or a compact e-bike with 20" or 24" wheels and a low step-through frame.
